Hello World

Welcome to Tree Society

“Designing, developing and delivering business management education for small and micro livelihoods enterprises in rural India”

Who we are

TREE Society (Training Resources for Enabling Enterprises Society) offers business management training for rural micro-enterprises and producer companies to improve their profitability and viability. We firmly believe that to bring about sustainable socio-economic change, we must go beyond philanthropy and bring knowledge and skills to disadvantaged groups in rural India. And we decided to do this by creating business management training programs called CREAM.

To design and develop these programs, TREE Society brought together people from diverse business backgrounds who contribute part of their time towards teaching. We have delivered programs for organisations such as Timbaktu Collective, Kudumbashree, Selco, VB Net, Seva Mandir, Jeevika, SRIJAN, Gram Vikas and the World Bank.

TREE (Training Resources for Enabling Enterprises) Society originated as a result of discussions with C.K. Ganguly of Timbaktu Collective. Timbaktu Collective is a voluntary organisation which has formed numerous village based organisations of the rural poor and promoted various producer-owned, mutually-aided business enterprises.

"The people we work with should participate in larger markets and they should do so from a position of strength. We must work on equipping them with skills and knowledge to do so". These thoughts led to like-minded professionals coming together to formulate, design, develop and deliver a unique training program called CREAM (Certificate in Rural Enterprise Administration and Management). ICCO provided initial funding and Timbaktu Collective helped TREE Society take root.

Our Objectives and how we achieve them :

1. Our objective is to deliver high quality business management education for managers of small and micro enterprises in rural as well as urban areas

  • We bring mainstream business concepts such as viability, costing and pricing a product, understanding breakeven etc. to our participants.
  • We ensure that there is a balance between breadth and depth of business management concepts from areas such as finance, sales & marketing, operations etc. The faculty for each module are practicing business professionals who ensure the relevance of the content with a focus on real-life application
  • The dual goals of exposure to mainstream business concepts and maintaining relevance to small businesses are achieved through theoretical discussions, application to the participants' businesses, and interactions with guest faculty with deep knowledge in specific business areas

2. To demonstrate a viable model for covering gap between supply of and demand for relevant business management education

  • Rural attitude towards entrepreneurship is changing in a positive way. NGOs want to encourage populations they serve to take on livelihood (business-like) activities. But people involved in conceptualising these initiatives or running the businesses often don't know how to own, start, and manage a business. Standard MBA courses are high cost and elitist, and thus inaccessible for this population. The current scope of Bachelor of Commerce and other degrees don't address this need either.
  • TREE Society attempts to fill this gap between demand and supply by offering bilingual (English and local language) programs at the doorsteps of people who need them.

3. To build a platform for professionals from the mainstream to contribute towards improvement of pro-poor enterprises

  • We encourage business professionals to act as faculty in our programs for their areas of business expertise. Since the teaching material has already been prepared, it offers busy professionals a readymade platform to utilize their skills and teaching interest to help improve pro-poor enterprises. All faculty must pass through a selection process, to ensure high quality of training in our programs.
  • Professionals with experience in managing business operations, marketing, sales, strategy, finance in corporates
  • Entrepreneurs with businesses in market strategy, training, restaurants, and consulting
  • Teaching and training experience from K-12 schools, university, institutes and corporate trainings
  • Experience in rural development from Gram Vikas, Timbaktu Collective, Asha for Education and Ashoka
  • Strong educational background with Masters and Doctoral degrees in Business Management, Accounting, Finance & Economics, Engineering and Science

  • All course material used by TREE Society has been developed by faculty members with extensive business experience.
Teaching pedagogy and hence content creation focused on three aspects:

    1) Relevance and appropriateness for the audience...

    • Study of rural enterprises and producer companies to understand typical problems
    • Use of concepts and case studies which are directly relevant to a small business, excluding content relevant to large companies
    • Classes held in bilingual manner; all content in local language
    • Sessions held 5 days a month to enable participants to continue working
    • Incorporating participants own businesses into the discussions

    2) Retention of business topics covered...

    • Concepts are taught through the use of examples and exercises
    • Every concept is illustrated through simple small-business situations (case study)
    • Every concept involves reiteration of the key points and questions for discussion
    • In-class exercises -- individual and in groups
    • Faculty available in the evenings for further Q&A

“Most training sessions have three hours of narration and 15 minutes of thinking. Here (in CREAM) there is 15 minutes of narration and we have to think for three hours.”

    3) Application of business topics covered to real-life businesses...

    • Throughout the course, students apply concepts to their own or alternate business through a project that extends throughout the program
    • At the end of each module, they are given a list of questions to help them analyze their business at increasing levels of detail
    • After the last module they use the detailed analysis to create a business plan. This plan is then reviewed by faculty
    • Post-training, there are scheduled check-points (typically 6 months after end of training), where students meet the faculty to discuss issues in understanding or application

Once the material was developed, it went through several rounds of revisions and corrections. Firstly, content for each module was reviewed in detail by the faculty of all other modules to ensure internal consistency and application across modules. After the delivery of the first pilot, the content was improved based on feedback from participants and organizational leaders.

Subsequently, the content was reviewed in detail by Prof. R. Rajagopalan, who, during a long and illustrious career, has been a senior professor at IRMA (Institute of Rural Management, Anand) for 15 years. We continuously improve and update the content to incorporate relevant local examples and feedback from participants.
